How to Choose a Tennis Bracelet

Three things decide how a line bracelet looks and wears: its length, its carat total weight and its clasp.

What a tennis bracelet is

A tennis bracelet, also called a line bracelet, is one continuous row of diamonds, linked so the line moves with your wrist. Ours are lab-grown diamonds set in 14K gold. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, grown above ground instead of mined, and ours come from an IGI-certified catalog.

1. Length

Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist just above the wrist bone. A line bracelet should have a little room to move, so most people add about half an inch to an inch to that number. Too tight and the links stiffen; too loose and it slides over the hand.

Both of our line bracelets are 7 inches long. If your wrist measures more than about 6 1/2 inches, ask the concierge before you order.

2. Carat total weight and stone size

A bracelet's weight is given in carat total weight (ct tw): every diamond in it weighed together. On a bracelet of a set length, more total weight means larger stones, and fewer of them fit around the wrist. Each stone weighs the total divided by the number of stones, so a 1 ct tw line of 100 diamonds is one hundredth of a carat per stone.

The Gabriella Line shows it well: at 1 ct tw each diamond is about 1.3 mm across, and the stones grow with the weight, up to 16 1/2 ct tw. The Delicate Line comes at one weight, 1 5/8 ct tw, with 1.7 mm stones.

3. Clasps

Box clasp
A flat tongue slides into a small box on the other end and clicks shut. It sits in line with the diamonds, so the row reads unbroken. Many add a side latch as a second lock.
Lobster clasp
A spring-loaded hook, more common on lighter chain bracelets.
Fold-over clasp
A hinged piece that folds flat and snaps closed.

Both of our line bracelets close with a box clasp.

Questions

What length should a tennis bracelet be?
Measure your wrist just above the wrist bone and add about half an inch to an inch, so the line can move a little. Both of our line bracelets are 7 inches long.
What does ct tw mean on a tennis bracelet?
Carat total weight: every diamond in the bracelet weighed together. At the same length, a higher total weight means larger stones.
What clasp do your tennis bracelets have?
A box clasp: a flat tongue that slides into a small box on the other end and clicks shut.
